2022 UK Sleep Report

sleep

Sleep is one of the most frequently talked about health subjects, both in the UK and globally. How much sleep we get, and whether that sleep is or isn’t ‘good quality’ are topics that are widely discussed by doctors, wellness specialists and members of the public alike.

According to recent sleep statistics, approximately one in seven UK residents have chronic insomnia – that’s a long term inability to fall or stay asleep for a ‘healthy’ amount of time. This categorisation is defined as somewhere between six and eight hours a night for adults, though the optimum amount of sleep is relative.

Other sleep issues, like snoring, sleep walking and talking, sleep paralysis and sleep apnoea are also common in many bedrooms.

What’s more, the same estimations show sleep issues like in insomnia to impact certain demographics more than others – with one in four women reportedly experiencing it at some point in their lives, and factors like pregnancy and menopause playing a big role in this.

Last year, Miracle Leaf’s research team conducted a study to find out where the most sleep-deprived people in the UK lived, based on local search data.

Now, they are taking a deeper dive into the state of the nation’s sleep in 2022.

Methodology

Researchers used Google’s Keyword Planner tool to find local search volumes for different keywords relating to sleep and each of the sleep disorders and issues.

This gave an indication of which places had the highest numbers of monthly searches for each.

Up-to-date local population data was then gathered from ONS, and used alongside the local search volumes to work out which places had the highest rates of searches for each of the terms.
