CBD for cats and other pets is a growing market, helping pet owners provide the benefits of CBD to their cats. CBD oil for cats works in a similar way to humans, meaning many of the same effects may occur.
These include potential pain relief, reduced levels of anxiety and reduced inflammation or discomfort. Studies into the effects of CBD oil on cats are currently inconclusive but studies carried out have shown a positive link between CBD use and these effects.
How does CBD oil work?
CBD interacts with cannabinoid receptors found throughout the body. These receptors form part of the nervous system and can be separated into CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors are typically found in the brain and are stimulated by taking CBD orally, while CB2 receptors are found in skin cells and can be stimulated with topical CBD application.
CBD interacts with these receptors which then send signals to the brain which affect reactions like pain sensation, appetite, memory and adrenaline production.
Is CBD suitable for cats?
Cats have an endocannabinoid system much the same as humans, meaning they can benefit from CBD use in a similar way. However, because cats are much smaller than humans, their dosage needs to be at a much lower level.
CBD is non-toxic so your cat won’t overdose on any product you give them but it’s essential to follow dosage requirements to avoid any unwanted side-effects and ensure your cat is safe at all times.
What are the benefits of CBD oil for cats?
CBD oil can provide cats with a range of benefits similar to those humans can enjoy. These include:
- reduced feelings of anxiety
- muscle and joint pain management
- regulated sleeping pattern
- reduced inflammation
CBD interacts with everybody’s endocannabinoid system differently, so while these benefits have all been noted by CBD users, not every user will observe the same results. If CBD doesn’t seem to be working for your cat in the way you intended it, consider slowly increasing their dosage or ceasing its use altogether.
How much CBD should I give my cat?
CBD dosage is based on the weight of the user, which is why CBD products made especially for pets come at a much lower dosage level than for humans. The pet products we stock at Miracle Leaf include a pet size guide so you have an understanding of the right product for your pet and how much to give them.
When giving your pet CBD to help them with chronic pain, it’s generally recommended to give them a dose every eight hours. This will help your pet avoid experiencing pain again before the product wears off. When giving your cat CBD for other reasons, such as anxiety management, one dose per day will typically be a suitable amount.
What are the side effects of CBD oil for cats?
While CBD isn’t toxic, there are some side effects that have been observed that are harmful to your cat’s everyday health. These include drowsiness, upset stomach, dry mouth or increased thirst, tremors and low blood pressure.
These side-effects are often the result of a dosage over your pet’s tolerance level and can generally be avoided by following the dosage advice. If your cat experiences any of these side-effects, lower their dosage or cease using the product altogether. Consult your vet if you have any more concerns about your cat’s wellbeing after they have experienced any of these symptoms.
Can I give my cat CBD for humans?
Because your cat’s endocannabinoid system is so similar to the one found in humans, it is technically possible to give your cat CBD meant for human consumption. Many products for humans will be designed to be safe for pets but it’s always a good idea to check the product information to see if there are any ingredients that are toxic to cats.
The main reason pet CBD products exist separately is because of the differences in dosage allowance. While it’s possible to give your pet human CBD, you will have to ensure that the dosage is much lower than what you would take for yourself.
To protect your cat’s health and safety, opt for a pet CBD product for a better indication of their dosage requirements.
How do I give my cat CBD?
Most people just add a couple of drops to their food bowl and mix it in with their food a little. Depending on the oil, your cat may enjoy the taste and not need it masked by food. If you struggle to feed your cat CBD oil through this method, we also stock CBD treats that may make for a more enjoyable dosing process.
