As more and more humans are turning to the benefits of CBD oil, pet owners are considering sharing the benefits with their four-legged friends.
CBD oil for dogs, cats and other pets could be the perfect solution if your pet experiences anxiety or has pain management needs. Though these products are not intended for the diagnosis, treatment or cure of any conditions, research has identified a positive link between CBD for pets and a reduction in symptoms like anxiety and pain.
Choose from oils, sprays and treats for a CBD experience that’s best for your pet so that they can fully enjoy the holistic benefits of CBD oil.
What is CBD oil?
CBD oil, or cannabidiol is an oil which contains the chemical CBD, derived from the cannabis plant. There are over 100 cannabinoids in hemp, but CBD is used in wellness products as it has a positive link with beneficial side-effects and doesn’t provide a ‘high’ that comes with illegal cannabis. The ‘high’ is linked to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a chemical which is only found in trace amounts in industrial hemp plants used to make CBD products.
CBD oil is gaining popularity thanks to it recently being made legal and its links with health benefits such as reduced levels of anxiety and pain relief. CBD oil is also different from hemp oil as hemp oil is made from the hemp plant but may not contain CBD, while CBD oil can be made from a range of oils, including olive, coconut and hemp.
How does CBD affect pets?
CBD affects dogs, cats and other pets like rabbits in similar ways to humans. Those who give their pets CBD products have noted that regular use can reduce levels of general and separation anxiety, control seizures and provide anti-inflammatory relief. However, due to its use on animals being relatively new, there is still no scientific consensus on how CBD affects pets and most evidence is anecdotal. Additionally, CBD oil interacts with the endocannabinoid system in both humans and animals. Every endocannabinoid system is different, so what works for one animal may not have the same effect on another. To best treat your dog or cat with CBD, identifying their tolerances and what products work best for them will be important.
Is CBD safe for my dog or cat?
All our pet products are made by leading brands in the field of pet CBD and are specially formulated with dogs, cats and other pets in mind. Though all animals will react differently to CBD, many who do use CBD to treat their pets have found positive results from it. Though there can be some side-effects from giving CBD to your dog, identifying the right CBD dosage and using high-quality products will help to reduce the risks to your pet.
If you are planning to buy CBD for your pet to treat chronic pain or any other health condition, consult your vet for better peace of mind beforehand.
Are there common side-effects of CBD for pets?
The commonly reported side-effects of CBD for pets are similar to those experienced by humans. The noted side-effects of high doses of CBD include:
- dry mouth or increased thirst
- upset stomach
- low blood pressure
Should your dog exhibit any of these side-effects, consider dropping their CBD dosage or cease usage and, as always, consult your vet for more advice.
Is there a difference between CBD for humans and CBD for pets?
CBD for humans and cat or dog CBD are made in much the same way and affect the cannabinoid system in similar ways so whether its CBD isolate or full-spectrum CBD, humans could technically take pet CBD and the other way around. However, the key difference in the products is the concentration. One of the main considerations in CBD dosage for a person or animal is weight, so the dosage for a person who weighs much more than a dog would be considerably higher.
For this reason, pet CBD is formulated at much lower concentrations to make them safer for pet consumption.
What’s the best CBD oil product for pets?
The best CBD oil for your pet will depend on a number of factors. CBD oil often comes in two different formulas – isolate and full or broad-spectrum. CBD is usually extracted from hemp using CO2 extraction methods that draw out the CBD and other terpenes in the plant. Full-spectrum CBD will often contain these terpenes and other ingredients as it is believed the combination has a more beneficial effect on the body. CBD isolate is when the CBD itself is separated from the other chemicals.
All our products use CBD sourced from organic hemp and are designed to provide benefit to you and your pets so finding the best product will be a matter of preference and how you intend to use them.
How much pet CBD oil should I use?
Each pet will react differently to CBD products so it may take a few uses to determine the best dosage for your pet. With the use of CBD oil for dogs or cats, one of the most important elements is weight. Our pet CBD products include guidance on choosing the right concentration for the weight of your pet so for more information, check out our individual products. Alternatively, we offer CBD dog treats which can help you determine portion control easier and can provide a more comfortable CBD experience for your pet.
